Maria is a senior researcher (Oberassistentin) at SED (Schweizerischer Erdbebendienst). Maria is currently working on physics-based numerical modelling of ground motion on local and regional scales. The goal is to construct modular numerical meshes for high-fidelity simulations using 3-D velocity models that can then allow us to improve input for seismic hazard assessment. Maria is also interested in combining physics-based, deterministic methods with stochastic approaches based on machine-learning to develop hybrid methods for synthetic broadband waveform modelling.

Before joining SED, Maria was working on global full-waveform inversion in the group of Seismology and Wave Physics at ETHZ. She has developed methods to analyse full sensitivity of seismic waves and perform inversion using full-waveform and adjoint methods.

Maria's current research interests:

  • Wave physics and computational seismology
  • Earthquake seismology
  • Advances in numerical seismic wave propagation
  • Full-waveform inversion
  • Seismic hazard analysis and ground motion modelling
  • Various scales Earth structure inference
  • High-performance computing
