Researcher at Swiss Seismological Service (SED), ETH Zürich, involved in the following Projects:

  • Swiss Strong-Motion Network Renewal, a joint project of the SED Risk, Earthquake Monitoring&Alert and ELab group (first phase of the project completed in 2013). Tasks: strong-motion data and metadata integration in the routine monitoring and processing software tools of the SED; data quality verification and optimisation; development of strong-motion noise models; data dissemination to SED and public; ground-motion and response spectra prediction, with focus on displacements and long periods. Site characterisation and complex site effects.
  • ShakeMap at SED, presently a research project of the Earthquake Monitoring&Alert group in cooperation with the Risk group (formerly coordinated by G. Cua). Tasks: scientific coordinator; customisation to Swiss conditions: development and implementation of regional GMPEs and site effect estimates; design and maintenance of SeisComP3-compatible real-time waveform parameterisation tools.
  • SuiHaz15, the 2015 update of the Swiss Seismic Hazard maps. Tasks: within the GMPE working group, selection and adjustment of empirical GMPEs, parameterisation and validation of the Swiss stochastic model against historical macroseismic intensity data.
  • SeiscomP3 at SED, the major seamless technical effort of the Earthquake Monitoring&Alert group. Tasks: metadata maintenance and data dissemination to SED and public.
  • EIDA at SED, contribution of the Swiss national seismic networks to the European Integrated waveform Data Archive. Tasks: ETH node maintenance, member of the ODC EIDA technical commission.
  • EEW at SED, real-time dissemination of earthquake alerts via the Virtual Seismologist algorithm. Tasks: customisation of shaking predictions to Swiss conditions and end-user interaction.
  • UE NERA, Network of European Research Infrastructures for Earthquake Risk Assessment and Mitigation. Tasks: NA2 (EIDA); NA3 (scientific concept and initial implementation efforts of the Rapid Raw Strong-Motion Database); NA5 (Valais near-source observatory); JRA2 (ShakeMap and Earthquake Early Warning), JRA3 (physics-based GMPEs), JRA1 (simplified models for topographic amplification).
  • UE REAKT, Strategies and tools for Real Time EArthquake RisK ReducTion. Tasks: WP7 (Strategic Applications and Capacity Building) coordinator. Also responsible for task 4.5 (Regional and Threshold-based early-warning using dense nation networks) and task 7.2 (Feasibility studies and initial EEW implementation efforts in nuclear power plants).

  • INGV-DPC S2 (Development of a dynamical model for seismic hazard assessment at national scale, http://nuovoprogettoesse2.stru.polimi.it/). Tasks: Choice of consolidated ground motion prediction equations (GMPE) to be used in PSH analyses. Broadening the options for site classification in GMPE, e.g. including topographic amplification factors in ground motion prediction models by means of numerical simulations of near-field ground motions.
  • INGV-DPC S4 (Italian accelerometric archive, http://itaca.mi.ingv.it/ItacaNet/). Tasks: Signal processing aimed at preserving long-period ground motions from recorded accelerograms.
  • PRIN07 (Prediction of ground motion and generation of shaking maps in the near-fault region of an earthquake). Tasks: installation, maintenance and analysis of data acquired by a temporary accelerometer network currently operating in Friuli, NE Italy.
2005 - 2008
