The Swiss Seismological Service at ETH Zurich (SED) is collaborating with the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) to enhance seismic monitoring for the construction of the second tube of the Gotthard Highway Tunnel, which connects Göschenen, UR, and Airolo, TI. SED has recently deployed seven new seismic stations along the tunnel route to augment the capabilities of its automated seismological analysis system. This initiative aims to monitor both natural and mining-induced microearthquakes near the tunnel construction zones and the trajectories of the existing and new tunnel tubes, typically separated by approximately 75 meters. SED promptly provides FEDRO with earthquake alerts and comprehensive assessments for all detected seismic events, thereby contributing to the safe and efficient operation of tunnelling activities and highway traffic.
