Tonja Iten

At the Swiss Seismological Service (SED), Tonja Iten's research focuses on the societal dimensions of natural earthquake research and induced seismicity in the context of geoenergy applications. Her work explores how people perceive and respond to earthquake-related risks, the human side of earthquake early warning systems, involving relevant stakeholders, and the communication of complex scientific information such as Operational Earthquake Forecasting. In the field of geoenergy, namely deep geothermal energy and carbon capture and storage, she is interested in public risk perception, social acceptance, and meaningful stakeholder engagement.

More broadly, her research is driven by questions related to sustainability transformations within planetary boundaries and pathways towards net zero, including topics such as sufficiency, post-growth policies, and public acceptance of sustainability and energy transition measures.
